read "Selling
the Dream: How to Promote Your Product, Company
or Ideasand Make a DifferenceUsing Everyday
Evangelism"
by Guy Kawasaki and her dream was born.
Well, it might be more accurate to say she now had a
name for the dream that had brought her to the San Francisco
Bay Area in the first place. It was 1993 and it turned
out to be a dream that refused to die.
She came to the Bay Area recovering from a rude awakening.
After a Masters in Computer Science, she found that
spending all day every day talking to computers at Bell
Labs was just not her thing. It wasn't Bell Labs that
was the problem. As a matter of fact, she really enjoyed
the intellectual stimulation and freedom that environment
provided. It was just that, taking care of the process
in a network management system that parsed messages
from nodes didn't quite compare with creating recursive
algorithms in Star Lisp for high precision arithmetic
on the Connection Machine. But we digress...
So in between writing poems at her desk, she decided
that the aforementioned "parser" was too important
to be known by just one person. She designed a presentation
to spread the knowledge. It was successful and requested
at other locations. Soon she was driving across the
country to the Bay Area, looking for a place where talking
to people was part of the technology environment.
Before fleeing the corporate coop, she was last seen
managing a global team of evangelists at Sun Microsystems.
And she was developing more and more ideas of how marketing
really ought to be done. She's practically spent her
whole life in technology and continues to love it. But
... in Evangelist Marketing, this Principal has
created a world where the many types of creative expression
she loves come together. It's a very cool thing.
